May 2026: The South African Shelf Nobody Else Is Watching

June 8, 20264 min readCrawlbot Team

Profitero, Edge by Ascential and Salsify don't track the South African digital shelf at hourly cadence. We do — ten ZA retailers including Takealot, Amazon ZA, Makro, Incredible Connection, HiFi Corp and Game. In May 2026 it behaved nothing like the UK.

An ASUS / Dell race — with local builders in the mix

ASUS leads, but Dell ranks #2 — far stronger than its UK position, driven by Takealot and Makro. The standout difference from the UK and Poland is the local system builders: PCBuilder and Skytech hold real shelf share that global players routinely overlook, and Xiaomi registers here where it barely appears on the UK CE shelf.

Amazon ZA is already a retail-media market

RetailerSponsored Share (May)
Amazon ZA16.1%
Takealot13.9%
Makro, Incredible, HiFi Corp, Game~0%

Amazon ZA already runs 16.1% sponsored and Takealot 13.9% — a meaningful retail-media layer most brands selling into South Africa don't even know exists. The rest of the ZA shelf is still effectively organic.

If you sell into South Africa, you're probably flying blind

Most teams selling into SA rely on distributor reports and manual spot-checks. The shelf is structurally different from the UK — different #2 brand, local builders with real share, an emerging sponsored market on Amazon ZA. The full South African breakdown, alongside the UK and Poland, is in the free May report below.

Methodology note

Data covers 1–31 May 2026 across Takealot, Amazon ZA, Makro, Incredible Connection, HiFi Corp, Game, Computermania, PC International, Matrix Warehouse and FirstShop. Share of page is weighted by daily listing volume; sponsored share is the percentage of listings carrying a paid label.
